Understanding the Condition
What Is a Sports Injury?
A sports injury is damage to a muscle, ligament, tendon, joint or bone that happens during sport or exercise, either suddenly from an impact, twist or fall, or gradually from repeated load over weeks of training. Acute injuries usually bring sudden pain, swelling and difficulty using the area; overuse injuries tend to start as an ache after training that creeps earlier into each session. An injury can also change how you move, so a sprained ankle alters how load travels up through the knee, hip and lower back. At Bewell's Novena clinic, opening soon, a Gonstead chiropractor looks beyond the sore spot, observing posture and gait and checking the spine and related joints by hand, segment by segment, for tenderness and restricted movement, and adjusts by hand only where a joint is not moving well. If you cannot bear weight, a joint looks deformed, or you have numbness or sudden weakness, see a registered doctor for diagnosis first.
