Understanding the Condition
What Is Whiplash?
Whiplash is a neck injury caused by a rapid back-and-forth movement of the head (an acceleration-deceleration injury), which strains the discs, facet joints, ligaments and muscles of the cervical spine beyond their normal range. Rear-end car collisions are the most common cause, but contact sports, falls and direct blows produce the same movement, and vehicle damage is a poor guide to how much the neck was strained. Symptoms typically build over hours to days: neck pain and stiffness, headaches at the base of the skull, and sometimes dizziness or tingling into the arms. At Bewell's clinic, opening soon in Novena, a Gonstead chiropractor assesses the neck segment by segment by hand, using the Gonstead analysis: posture and movement, Nervoscope readings of skin temperature along the spine, and static and motion palpation. Any adjustment is gentle, specific and done by hand, to support comfortable neck movement. If you lost consciousness, have severe pain, arm numbness or weakness, or suspect a fracture, see a registered doctor or an emergency department first for diagnosis.
